Seaside Wooly Sunflower

Eriophyllum staechadifolium

Seaside Woolly Sunflower is a coastal perennial herb with a very similar appearance to golden yarrow. The silvery green leaves are typically deeply lobed, with rolled-under edges and a deep center midrib. The leaves are up to seven centimeters long. Crowning the short stems are several tightly packed flower heads. The golden flowers have a large center disc framed by 6 small, rounded petals.

Habitat

  • Native to the coastline of Oregon and California, including the Channel Islands

  • Found primarily in coastal ecosystems, such as dunes, coastal bluffs, coastal strands


Reproduction

  • Flowers from late spring to summer

  • Pollinated by various insects
